If you’re looking for a city escape this summer, you’ll find plentiful reasons to visit Australia’s 3rd most popular craft beer festival, Ballarat Beer Festival this January 20, 2018. Just an hour and half drive from Melbourne CBD, this popular festival is gaining favour fast with craft beer fanatics and locals alike.


1.   Over 150 different craft brews on offer

If you’re a fan of craft beer, the festival’s boulevard of brewers will be your own special beervana. With a kaleidoscope of tastes and flavours you can take your pick from over 150 different brews from across Australia and around the world.

If you’re not a huge fan of the golden drop, there’s plenty of non-beer beverages available including wines and summery cocktails. There will be plenty of non-alcoholic drink options too.

2.   Easy transport – train or car

Ballarat Beer Festival will be held at their brand new location on the shady and cooling shores of Lake Wendouree. Getting there is a breeze.

By train: Round up a group of friends and head to Southern Cross Station to catch a V/Line to Wendouree station. The gardens are about a ten minute walk from the station or take a scenic tram ride to the event grounds.

By car: Ballarat is located 115 km northwest of Melbourne, approx. 1.5 hours drive along the M8. Take the Ballarat exit and pass through the city centre. Then travel along Sturt Street and turn right at Hamilton Avenue, which is about 3 kilometres from the City centre. Signs throughout the town will direct you to Lake Wendouree and you’ll find the festival on the far Western side opposite the botanical gardens.

Gold coin shuttle bus: As a festival dedicated to promoting responsible drinking, a free shuttle bus will be running a gold coin donation service from Ballarat central to Lake Wendouree with the route to be announced closer to the day.

3. Immerse yourself in the beer culture

The year’s Lakeside Edition is all about celebrating the very best of craft beer culture. This means you’ll discover beer education classes, blind tastings, trivia games, the popular brewers sack race and plenty more. The beer education classes are a highlight. Thi syear you can learn how to perfectly match beer and food, start a brewery or get behind the many women of beer – all hosted by Australian beer celebrities Professor Pilsner and Beer Diva.

4. Awesome music lineup

No festival is complete without music and this year’s rocking lineup includes rambunctious rock’n’rollers The Vanns, the delicate country and soul inflections of Hana and Jessie-Lee and funk, soul and groove from Centre & The South, to just name a few. This year’s eclectic mix will provide the perfect soundtrack to your summer’s day.

5. Global cuisines aplenty

Scattered about the grounds you’ll find an extended range of street food options, all offering global cuisines to help wash down your favourite brew. From Thai BBQs with an aussie twist to gourmet French or tantalising spanish dishes, you’ll find mouth-watering flavours to help you power through the day.

6. Friday Night degustation dinner

Held the night before the festival, Gallagher’s Friday Night Degustation Dinner provides the best opportunity to mix and mingle with the brewers as you enjoy a delicious 5 course menu served with perfectly matched beers. Hosted by Beer Diva and Professor Pilsner, the degustation dinner is a huge night on the Australian beer calendar and not to be missed. Ballarat is a town with a rich brewing history. Their university offers a commercial brewing course and many of Australia’s most successful brewers got their start there. In fact, they love beer so much, the festival has officially changed the town’s name to Beerllarat fpr the festival duration (yes, the mayor endorsed the name).
