Cultural Diversity Week
A kaleidoscopic mix of colours, culture and cuisine, Cultural Diversity Week (16-24 March) celebrates the many communities that call Melbourne home. Here are our top ways to join the party.
Melbourne Dumpling Festival
If you love xiao long bao and har gow, you’ll feel at home at Melbourne Dumpling Festival. There’ll be loads of activities, including a pop-up wine bar, wine and dumpling pairings, a bubble tea drinking competition and information stalls for students. You could even win a years supply of dumplings! It all kicks off with the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome on Friday night. 15-16 March at 206 Bourke Street.
One Beat One Love
Discover the next generation of African artists, DJs, musicians, speakers and community leaders at One Beat One Love. Celebrate diversity over an afternoon of song, dance, food and stories at the Immigration Museum. Sunday 24 March.
Victorian Mosque Open Day
Explore your local mosque and learn about your Muslim neighbours at the Victorian Mosque Open Day. Take a mosque tour, learn about Islamic beliefs, join in a hijab tutorial and try your hand at henna tattoo art. Go with the whole family and enjoy jumping castles and sausage sizzles. Sunday 17 March.
Multicultural Hub open day
Join in a joyous celebration of cultures at the Multicultural Hub open day. Browse market stalls and learn about different traditions including an Ethiopian coffee ceremony, basket weaving and henna painting. Highlights include live performances from Burundian drummers and Bollywood dancers.
Hit two birds with one stone by checking out the last Summer Night Market at Queen Victoria Market, a 30-second walk away from the Multicultural Hub. Wednesday 20 March.
Victoria’s Multicultural Festival
This much-loved annual free festival at Federation Square showcases arts, craft, live performances and a huge variety of international food. Saturday 23 March.
Featuring some of Victoria’s most exciting up-and-coming artists, Culture Waves brings young, multicultural sounds to Cultural Diversity Week. Hear acclaimed Arnhem Land rapper Baker Boy, as well as Kaiit, Adrian Eagle and more in this free and very special gig that takes place after Victoria’s Multicultural Festival. Saturday 23 March.
The Welcome Game
The Welcome Game celebrates Melbourne’s cultural identity and passion for AFL. Head to the MCG on Saturday 23 March to Melbourne vs Port Adelaide for free. Yep, you read that right: free.
Carlton Harmony Day Community Lunch
Bring a plate of food to share and get to know your neighbours in this communal sit-down lunch. Taste the flavours of the world at the Carlton Harmony Day Community Lunch, and enjoy kids activities, an art installation, music and free finger food. Saturday 30 March.
Kensington Community Fair
Immerse yourself in a series of different cultural activities including Chinese calligraphy and traditional dance. at the Kensington Community Fair. It’s happening Sunday 31 March as part of the Kensington Community Festival.
