City of Melbourne – Taking action on climate change
Local action, global leadership
The City of Melbourne is proud to be part of a local and international movement of cities taking urgent action to reduce emissions and to address climate change impacts.
On behalf of Melbourne we are continuing to lead and call for ambitious and rapid climate change action among our residents, community organisations, businesses, investors and all levels of government in Australia.
We are already investing in renewable energy through the Melbourne Renewable Energy Project. Thanks to this Australian first a new windfarm in regional Victoria has begun supplying energy to Town Halls, bank branches, universities and street lights across Melbourne. It’s a model that can be replicated all over Australia
We are also investing in our urban forests, green buildings, waste innovation and in better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. Through such creative initiatives we can deliver better health for our community, together with economic, social and environmental benefits.
Taking bold action together
We all need to take urgent action, together with the Victorian and Australian governments, to strengthen an international effort to limit global warming to 1.5°C and avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
The cost of not acting on climate change will be felt by everyone in Melbourne in terms of increasing health risks, disruption to businesses and major events and damage to our parks and gardens. What we do now will have a huge impact on the type of city we leave for our children.
We invite you to join us in our commitment to urgent, transformational action, with clear benefits for all who live and work in our city.
